Are 20-Storey Skyscrapers Coming to Your Suburb?
Melbourne’s skyline is poised for dramatic change, with the Victorian Government proposing new high-density developments across several suburban areas. While city growth is inevitable, many residents are asking: at what cost to Melbourne’s renowned liveability?
The State Government, under Premier Jacinta Allan, recently announced a sweeping plan to tackle the ongoing housing crisis, promising expedited approval for 20-storey skyscrapers in selected suburbs and six-storey buildings in traditionally lower-density neighbourhoods. This ambitious approach is targeted at accommodating Melbourne’s projected population boom, with a long-term goal of expanding from its current 5 million residents to a London-sized 15 million.
These changes are set to impact suburbs across three council areas—Bayside, Boroondara, and Stonnington. Yet, the announcement has raised considerable concerns. Many feel that these plans have been introduced hastily, with minimal community consultation and lacking clear commitments to enhance local infrastructure. Questions linger about whether provisions for amenities, heritage protections, and community involvement will be respected.
Melbourne residents are also wary about how this move will impact the character of their suburbs. While additional housing is essential, is high-density development the right approach for Melbourne’s suburban heartlands?
For residents who feel that high-rise towers are incompatible with their suburban lifestyle, a petition is circulating to urge the government to reconsider these plans. Those concerned about Melbourne’s future liveability, character, and infrastructure are encouraged to lend their voice.
